Why Breastfeed

With Advanced Technology -      Why Breastfeed? Now that we know so much about science and the genetic make-up of almost everything, it seems like a good idea to go ahead and use the formula and it is much easier anyway, right?  I think not.  It may appear that way with all the loving commercials you see about high nutrient formula, but it just isn't so. The nutrients found in the milk you produce and the special benefits these nutrients provide, can not be duplicated even today.
There are many Mothers who cannot breastfeed due to medical complications.  That is unfortunate for them.  For those that have a choice, and are questioning the pros and cons of breastfeeding, this article was written for you.
There are many physiological and psychological rewards for both you and your baby (see advantages).  Some mothers and babies take to the experience very well and others do not.   One of the many reasons for success or failure is obviously how you view breastfeeding.  Your attitude about breastfeeding is probably the only reason you should or should not breastfeed.  If you cannot have an open mind to honestly try breastfeeding, to watch the bonding occur between you and your baby, it will only frustrate you both.My personal story is further down on this page, to prove the bonding process more clearly.

Advantages For Babies-

  • Human milk is unique and custom-made to promote brain and body growth.
  • Colostrum (clear to creamy substance found in the breast) provides unmatched immunity against bacteria and viruses, protecting vulnerable newborns from a host of diseases they are exposed to.
  • Colostrum acts as a natural laxative to clear the meconium (first stool) from the baby's intestine.  This decreases the chance of jaundice.
  • Colostrum also contains natural sugar lactose, which helps stabilize blood sugar levels, preventing hypoglycemia.  When Mother's milk comes in, it replaces the colostrum.
  • The action of sucking at the breast enhances the development of oral muscles and facial bones.
  • breast feeding infants for four to six months (breast milk is less likely to produce allergic reactions and it strengthens the immune system),
Breastfed babies:
  • have fewer ear and diarrheal infections
  • experience less vomiting and acute respiratory illness
  • are at lower risk for childhood diabetes, lymphomas and Crohn's disease
  • tend to have higher IQs than formula fed babies. Each time a child is put to the left breast he is using his left brain to think causing growth.  Each time a child is put to the right breast he is using his right brain to think and causing growth.
Advantages for Mothers -
When your baby is put to your breast immediately after birth, there is a release of the hormone oxytocin into the mother's system.  This helps constrict uterine blood vessels and helps minimize blood loss.  Repeated release of oxytocin through nursing causes the uterus to return to it pre-pregnancy size quicker.  Prolactin, the milk producing hormone, has a relaxing effect on the mother and stimulates maternal instincts.  Ongoing production of milk burns calories and helps you to lose weight.  Women who breastfeed have been shown to have less incidence of pre-menopausal breast cancer, cervical cancer and osteoporosis.

Dr. Mom's Guide to Breast Feeding by Dr. Marion Kniefert, states that a 20-25% reduction in premenopausal ovarian cancer and a 25% reduction in breast cancer has been shown in those mothers who breastfed two months or more.

Feeding Advantages -

  • Milk is always at the right temperature.
  • Milk is always fresh and perfectly clean.
  • Milk is always instantly available.
  • No recalls on your milk due to undeclared substances.
  • Pumped milk can be stored for 5-8 days in the refrigerator or a year in deep freezer.
  • Lowers your medical bills because infants who are breastfed are less likely to have ear infections and allergies and many other health problems.
  • Best of all is the cost.  Pure Gold absolutely FREE.

Personal Experience on Breastfeeding

Rachael
I was a first time Mom, late in life.  Maybe you can relate.  I read books and took a Bradley Course (similar to Lamaze).  As a young adult I was so against the thought of breastfeeding.  I said I would never breastfeed  when the time came for me to have a baby.  When I did marry and become pregnant,  I considered the idea of breastfeeding, probably because my sister had breastfed both of her children.  I was still not ready to commit to it and chose a "wait and see" attitude.
Thirty minutes before they brought my little girl in to see me I decided I would try it because my husband had asked me to.  I was not opposed to the idea because I had not allowed myself to think about it enough to form an opinion.  I was more concerned about the labor and birth.
So I picked up a book that I had been given in the hospital, that was written by Medela, called The Breastfeeding Information Guide.  That little book explained everything so perfectly!  I read as fast as I could.  Breastfeeding, for me, was a breeze.  A little strange at first, but wow!  I thought this might actually work!
When my little girl was 4 months old,  I had to leave her with my Mother for three long days.  My husband is a US Marine and it was mandatory he attend their Birthday Ball in another city. It was  an hour and a half away from my parents home.  I began storing milk (see price list for csf bags).  I knew this separation was not going to be easy.
The day came to drop my child at my parents home.  This was hard because we convince ourselves that our parents have forgotten how to parent the correct way. In all seriousness, my paranoia was really because we had built that close bond and I knew my mother as a substitue was not going to cut it.
We finally made it to the hotel where the Ball was taking place. In our room we began to get dressed for the evening.  I had to pump before going down to the Ballroom, so I would not ruin my dress, and  I made sure everything was in place (bra pads so I wouldn't leak). We were finally at our table.  I might have been there for 10 minutes when I had to excuse myself.  I was feeling like I needed to pump and quick!  I was feeling a let-down.  My husband said, "I don't understand you just pumped".  I told him I knew it was crazy but I said, "I bet if I called Mother, I would find Rachel screaming her head off ".
I ran to the room, began pumping and I called my Mother.  Sure enough, my little girl was screaming.  The bottles of milk I had stored were not calming her down.  It was me she missed, not the milk.
There is a bond.  Some people will never believe it.  My Mother who did not breastfeed was a believer that day. That was not the only time I called her at exactly the time my Mother could not calm Rachael down.
My little girl is now 4 years old and we are still very close.  I am very happy my husband suggested I try breastfeeding.  He's a good guy.  As advice to others I offer just this; allow yourself the option and don't form opinions about breastfeeding until you try it.  Babies are born to the idea of breastfeeding, it is natural. Children know if you are not comfortable.  Babies will be uncomfortable if they sense your uneasiness.  After  all they have listened and heard you for almost nine months.  There are studies that will prove that too.
